Installation of 300 photovoltaic panels at the houses of students of low-income families in Sri Lanka (2006-2007)

The objective of the project was to improve the living conditions and income of the poorer layers of population as well as to reduce environmental pollution in the district of Moneragala.

It focused on providing photovoltaic panels to 2 schools and 300 families that belong to the 32% of the population of the island that lives under the bricks of poverty in one of the most remote and less developed districts. The project guaranteed free electricity from the sun to about 1700 people that did not have any access to the electricity network and had no chance to gain access at least within the coming 5 years. Moreover, the project raised the local community’s awareness concerning the use of solar energy and other forms of renewable energy.

The project was co-funded by Hellenic Aid of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece and was implemented by ANCE with the approval of the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare of Sri Lanka.
